Art Courses

THE ESSENCE of the operation of the Art Group centres on the practical application of the teaching of the School to the artistic work of the members of the Group. Emphasis is given to the development of artistic skills such as drawing from observation and memory, anatomy, perspective, geometry, oil, water colour, and tempera painting. These are undertaken on the basic premise that artistic work contains two aspects; message and form, and that the ability to convey the message requires considerable facility in all aspects of these skills.

Drawing is the basic requirement for all students and exercises of all kinds, linear, tonal and textural are undertaken and practised with vigour - and enthusiasm.

When sufficient drawing ability is shown - painting, with its considerations of colour and composition, is begun and studies of master paintings of the highest quality are made by copying them as faithfully as possible.

This all gradually moves into creative work and rests on these principles: that the greatest creative work manifests not by a person but through consciousness unlimited by personal considerations; that craft transforms into art when it conveys a message and a smile from the Absolute; that the aim of artistic work is to melt the heart of those who come into contact with it and the evidence of whether it does this or not lies in whether it changes the direction of the life of the person who receives the message and its smile.
At present, the Art Group meets in its light, spacious studio for a two-hour drawing session on Sundays during the school term and also during the week in the evenings. Anyone is welcome, regardless of age or previous experience.
